May 18, 2015: Following a year-long closure, the East Orange Golf Course on Parsonage Hill Road in Short Hills will reopen on Saturday, May 23, 2015. Nine holes (the original back nine) will be open for play initially during renovation, with all 18 holes being available beginning July 4th weekend.
Located in the Township of Millburn, the golf course is owned and operated by the City of East Orange. It has been undergoing an extensive renovation by acclaimed golf course architect Stephen Kay. The course was originally designed in 1926 by Tom Bendelow, an architect renowned for making golf accessible and affordable for the public.
The goal for the renovation is to restore the old-fashioned charm of the golf course that will appeal to players of all abilities, according to Kay. “We are creating a player-friendly and aesthetically appealing golf course that will be affordable and allow for an enjoyable pace of play,” said Kay.
“All the greens are being resodded with bentgrass, all the tees and sand bunkers are being rebuilt and a new irrigation system is being installed,” added Kay. “The original first and second holes are being converted to a practice range, which the course did not have previously. Therefore, two new holes are being built in their place. When completed, the golf course will be a par 70 and play to 5,600 yards.”
Construction of a new, 6,000 square foot clubhouse and restaurant will begin later this summer, and it will be open for the 2016 golf season.
“We are very pleased and excited about the re-opening of the golf course,” said East Orange Mayor Lester Taylor III. “After years of neglect, the golf course and the overall facility will now be a source of pride and an asset to both the city and the surrounding area when this renovation is completed.”
Further evidence of the city’s commitment to restoring the luster to East Orange Golf Course is the hiring of Juan Casiano as golf course superintendent. Casiano has 20 years of experience in the golf industry and is a graduate of the Golf Turf Management School at Rutgers University.
